This publication describes his work as a PhD student at TNO Quality of Life, Zeist, in the WCFS Programme Microbial Functionality and Safety, which has been completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr Willem de Vos, Dr Ir. Mariet van der Werf and Dr Michiel Kleerebezem.

The public defense of this work takes place on Monday 24 April 2006 at 16.00 hrs at the Aula of the Wageningen University, Generaal Foulkesweg 1a, Wageningen.
